Kevin R. Gallagher studied at the Julliard School of Music, has won first prize in many international competitions, and is now considered one of America's leading young guitarists. This recital spans the Renaissance to the Baroque, the pieces being originally for the lute, or vihuela, the modern guitar not being developed until the mid-19th century. Though many of the pieces are now well established in the guitar repertoire, these performing editions are by Gallagher himself. Some of the works also exists in vocal arrangements, and there is a clear lyric character to the music. The most famous piece must be Bach's Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, perhaps more familiar as a harpsichord work, the other best-known composer being John Dowland. Elsewhere Francesco da Milano's melodies have an unaffected and simple beauty, Gallagher always resisting the temptation to add unnecessary ornamentation, the entire recital is distinguished by clean lines and a refreshing musical innocence. Two collections by Shirley Rumsey Music of the Italian Renaissance and Music of the Spanish Renaissance present comparable music on original instruments, while Julian Bream & John Williams Together: The Ultimate Collection offers a feast of virtuoso guitar playing. --Gary S.
