Laurent Daumail's cut and paste approach to building tracks and his magpie attitude to lifting samples has won him considerable critical acclaim, although it is widely thought that it was this mix that brought him to the attention of the majors and the subsequent Columbia deal that eventually resulted in the The Beat Assassinated. Aside from "Die Reconnaitra Les Siens" and the closing exclusive "Bronx Theme", Cam's own material takes a back seat in favour of paying homage to influence and inspiration. The first half of the tracklisting is dominated with instrumentals before a cut from 4 Hero's Dego (in his Tek 9 guise) flips in the vocal dimension, subsequent highlights coming from Peanut Butter Wolf's tales from the darkside, "Visitor", and the long-deleted 1991 infectious dancefloor filler "Juggling" from the Ragga Twins. The live construction, with cuts, stops and occasional effects thrown in on the fly injects a feeling of movement--with the resultant hip-hop journey an enjoyable one, which hasn't dated a jot since its release in 1997.--Kingsley Marshall
