That's All!

That's All was recorded at Las Vegas' Sands Hotel in 1966. Its two CDs feature Davis in front of a full-scale orchestra (including a string section) and a repertoire typically Davisian in its idiosyncrasies. Standards such as "With a Song in my Heart" and "Without a Song" rub shoulders with Disney and musicals hits like "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and "The Lady Is a Tramp". There are also the obligatory bows to his label boss and straw boss, Frank Sinatra, with "Chicago", "The Birth of the Blues" and a 10-minute version of "One for My Baby" that includes Jewish jokes, impersonations and comic routines. The routines are incredibly tight, even down to the pretend-gaffes and re-takes, all of which the audience gulps down like a hungry beast. Davis had a phenomenal talent, a wonderfully expressive and pliable voice, and incredible showbiz-like energy: the two things he falls short on a little too regularly on his records are taste and a sense of a settled artistic direction. Wonderfully entertaining, then, but ultimately showbiz rather than art, if such things matter to you. --Keith Shadwick
