Who but Ringo Starr could get away with a syrupy lyric like this: "When I look back / It sure was cool / For those four boys from Liverpool?" The wrap-up line is from "Liverpool 8," the title song from the drummer’s autobiographical 14th album: of Rory Storm, of Hamburg, and of John, Paul, and George. Like most Ringo efforts, it won’t win any songwriting accolades, but it can be just plain fun. Teaming with longtime collaborator Mark Hudson and producer Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), Starr belies his 67 years with still-solid drumming and an adolescence not far removed from "Octopus’s Garden." Emphasis here should be placed on the barroom request "Harry’s Song," as well as the seductively Spanish "Pasodobles" and a campy, banjo-led "RU Ready." With its infectious chorus--"Someone’s there to catch you when you’re ready to let go"--the latter could be a holdover from the Beatles’ White Album and confirms that, be it 1968 or 2008, when you ask for Ringo, it’s Ringo you get. --Scott Holter
