航空宇宙工学の優れたテキストブックです。航空工学により多くのページが割かれていますが、軌道設計に関する基礎的事項など、宇宙工学に関する事項も解説されています。
　例えば、"Early Predictions of Airplane Performance"といった多数の"Historical note"が本文中の節として解説されており、本書の理論的な解説などが無味乾燥なものでなく、生きたものとして伝わってきます。JPLのエンジニアの講演で、「廊下の向こうのドアの中に過去の探査ミッションに携わった人がいて、それが強みになっている」といった内容の話を聞きました。それと同じで、本書で記載される"Historical note"は経験を疑似体験できます。これが本書の最大の強みだと思います。下記に目次を示します。なお、2008年に第6版が発行されています。（星４はこのため）
