The history of house legend Junior Vasquez and Manhattan superclub Twilo are closely entwined. Back in 1989, Vasquez was one of the co-founders of the Sound Factory--an original haven for the New York's coolest house aficionados. The Factory closed in 1995 after complaints from the local community but it didn't stay shut for long; in the wake of huge public demand, it reopened as Twilo in 1997, with Vasquez returning, triumphantly, to the wheels of steel with his Saturday night residency "Juniorverse". It's these pneumatic house sets that are faithfully recreated on Volume One: a double CD collection that positions you right in the middle of Twilo's gyrating dancefloor, with Vasquez rummaging through cosmic progressive house plates, uplifting four-to-the-floor, boundary-skirting tribal electro and, on CD2, a box full of his own inimitable remixes; think, the sultry R&B of Kelis' "Good Stuff", recast as a triumphant podium-stormer, or the uplifting soul of Zelma Davis' "The Power" stretched out into a 10-minute funk marathon. Over two CDs, it feels nearly as long as his legendary Saturday night sets--but considering the scarcity of Vasquez's sets this side of the Atlantic, for true house obsessives, Twilo Volume One should be something of a revelation. --Louis Pattison
