Despite sterling, chart-scaling efforts from both the Boomtown Rats and The Stranglers in the New Wave-ish year of 1978, Grease--to paraphrase Franki Valli--was the word. And there seemed to be no getting away from the omnipotence of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in her very tight black trousers. Only to be expected, then, that sooner or later "the punks" would want to get their own back. This has happened--albeit in an inoffensively affectionate manner--courtesy of latter-day Floridian ska-punk goofballs Less Than Jake. And on Greased, they pay tribute to the songs from the film in the only way they know how to. Yes, Less Than Jake may only have one sound and one speed--hardcore and foot-to-the-floor respectively--but they put both of these attributes to pragmatic use, particularly on a barking Husker Dü style pop-metal version of "You're The One That I Want". Of course, "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "Summer Nights" sound ludicrous when performed as shouty thrashes and at the same speed as John Travolta's car race at the end of the film. But this isn't a record to take too seriously. It is only hoped that Olivia returns the compliment one day with an album's worth of Less Than Jake ballads. --Kevin Maidment
