Recorded with long-term writing partner John Leventhal, Whole New You is Shawn Colvin's first set of original songs since 1996's A Few Small Repairs. Having made her name in the late 1980s with the new folk movement, Colvin spent much of the 1990s cementing her position as a middle-of-the-road singer-songwriter tackling Ally McBeal issues on the way to Grammy heaven. It's business as usual on Whole New You, with a set of easy-going FM-friendly tunes built around everyday feminine concerns. The title track leans toward blandness, but the nicely arranged opener "Matter Of Minutes" provides a sense of resilience. "Anywhere You Go" has an undeniably delicious chorus, while the gently defiant closing piano and woodwind number "I'd Say I'm Sorry Now" rounds things off agreeably. Although there's little here to challenge new listeners, Whole New You won't displease Shawn Colvin's fans. --Mike Pattenden
