A verse translation that breathes life into the oldest English epic
★★★★★
Beowulf is the greatest old English epic. It tells of the heroic deeds of Beowulf, a Geatish warrior who visits the land of the Danes to fight the hideous monster Grendel and his spiteful mother. After returning home, he becomes king and rules wisely for fifty long years. Yet the day comes when the old king must fight a vicious dragon and gets mortally wounded.
This edition reproduces the original Old English text side by side with the verse translation by Seamus Heaney, which is a superb epic poem in its own right.
