While Claudio Arrau's third recorded Emperor lacks the fire and fastidious fingerwork of his versions under Galeria and Haitink, few approach the veteran pianist's regal calm and eloquent poise in the slow movement, including the younger Arrau. Sir Colin Davis provides a solid yet pliable orchestral framework, and the sound is gorgeously rounded. --Jed Distler
