Adam Pierce, the mastermind behind Bubble Core records, provides Mice Parade with its moniker (an anagram of his name) and continues to pursue his contemporary musical vision on All Roads Lead to Salzburg. His inter-locking, shimmering soundscapes fuse modern electronica with acoustic instruments, producing an engaging, hypnotic sound, similar to Terry Riley's In C and Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians with a pop sensibility. Mice Parade's previous recording, Ramda, had Pierce playing (and later overdubbing) all the instruments from a single studio take, whereas All Roads uses different musicians in a variety of settings. "The Levitation" and "Dub Interlude #2" are from live dates, where the musicians adequately simulate the layered studio sound. "One Road Led to Columbia" takes samples from live shows, mutating them with a computer, again using repetition as the main structural device. "Open Air Dance--Parts 3 & 4" showcases Pierce's drumming, and "Circle One" features his cheng-a Chinese zither. --Wally Shoup
