There were an extraordinary four years between volumes after the original album celebrated the franchise's 30th anniversary. The reluctance to release more music at least meant it genuinely is only the best material on the collections. From the classic series, Fred Steiner's music shines as a reminder of the great things television once achieved. His brassy motif from "The Corbomite Maneuver" is as instantly recognisable as a Vulcan ear. There is also a nice slice of millitaria in "Balance of Terror", and then subtler drama posed by "What are little girls made of?". Proportionately as prolific as Steiner in the spin-offs that followed was composer Dennis McCarthy. When "The Next Generation" concluded, his score to "All Good Things" was considered one of the very best in its 179-episode run. The spill-over into "Deep Space Nine" kept him extra busy, but always capable of turning in something like the ferocious season-four opener, "Way of the Warrior". Representing Voyager is a suite from the nostalgic "Bride of Chaotica", wherein David Bell gets to salute the 1930's serial escapades popularised by Flash Gordon. Collectors will appreciate these previously unavailable cues, along with a "Lounge Mix" of the classic theme and Nana Visitor performing "Fever" used in the DS9 episode "His Way". --Paul Tonks
