Riddlesで101個というのは、読み始めてみると少なく感じます。すぐ読み終わります。考えてみれば、今の時代101個くらいの英語のRiddlesであれば、わざわざお金を出して本を取り寄せて買わなくたって、Internetで調べればすぐ集まります。

内容的には、たまに面白いのはありますが、まあぜひこの本を、という程の面白さは感じませんでした。ただ、紙質は悪くないです。絵も良いです。

数が多く、値段が安いという点では、本書よりも、A Joke a Day: 365 Guaranteed Giggles　の方が良いとおもいます。

中には抱腹絶倒物があります。楽しく読めて英語の感覚が次第に分ってきます。makeを通常の意味と使役動詞の意味で引っ掛ける等、英語ならでは、日本語に訳しようの無い感覚です。あえて注文をつけるとすると、なぞなぞの問題の直ぐ下に答えを匂わせる絵が書いてあることで、これがなかったら結構考えさせられ、もっと面白いと思います。この１０１シリーズはすべて絵が面白いのでほかのものもお勧めです。

英語の先生が、クラスで使うにはちょっときついかもしれません。でも、外国人との会話で、応用できる感覚は養えるかも！No.96： What do you call a person who doesn't have all his fingers on one hand? answer: Normal.なんて例は、アメリカ人の感覚だな－って思いました。中級レベルの人がさっと読み流すには、楽しい本です。大笑いしたものも多くありました。イラストの助けで、全部のなぞなぞが、さらにおもしろおかしい感じがします。イラストは、答えを出す助けにもなっています。セクション1から９まで、複合語、二つ以上の意味がある単語、など、それぞれタ-ゲットをはっきりさせてあるので、ポイントは何かと迷うことがありません。一回は、目を通しておいてよかった、と思いました。

Most of the pages in this book consist of four parts: a riddle, an illustration which is often too helpful to enjoy solving the riddle, an explanation of the facts and background of the riddle, and an example of the speech containing the riddle. The riddles can be divided into two categories. Riddles in one group do not make any sense when they were put into Japanese, much dependent on the English language. They sometimes show us curious facts in English. Ones in the other group are beyond such boundary and can be understood when given in Japanese. They prove that logic is universal. Explanations give us full understanding of the way to solution, which make us aware of the cultural fact the riddles stand on. But what makes this book unique is the part at the bottom of each page, where we are shown how the riddle is used in a dialogue or statement. Sometimes riddles seem childish or famous, and I hesitate from using them in a conversation among adults. However, such riddles are very vivid there. This book gives us lots of clues to the witty communication.
