Dylan, an eight-year-old boy who struggles with reading, has always wanted a dog. When his mother finally consents and lets Dylan and his sister, Laura, pick out a pet at the local humane society, they all fall in love with Hershey, a loveable red-and-black Doberman pinscher.

Dylan quickly learns that taking care of a dog is not always all fun and games. He and Hershey both struggle to learn new skills — Dylan in reading class and Hershey in obedience training.

When Dylan decides to enroll Hershey as a reading dog at the local library, they embark on a new adventure filled with twists and turns that neither could have predicted.
