Taylor;Spirit of Django

The title is significant. This is not yet another exercise in the "gypsy jazz" genre, dedicated to recreating exactly the style of the great guitarist Django Reinhardt or the music of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, of which he was joint leader. Instead, Martin Taylor, a contemporary virtuoso of the jazz guitar, assembled the kind of band which Django might be leading if he were alive today. The music is recognisably Django- esque but at the same time unmistakably modern. The instrumentation, consisting of two guitars, saxophone, accordion and bass, is highly original but wonderfully effective and the repertoire, consisting of originals, standard tunes and a couple of old Django favourites, is similarly enterprising. This is the kind of lively, distinctive, tuneful music which appeals well beyond the dedicated jazz audience, and one of the tracks, "John & Mary" was, in fact, used in the long running series of television commercials for the Renault Clio starring "Nicole" and "Papa". This 1994 album was so popular that the band has been reassembled regularly ever since, for touring and recording further. This, however, is the first and best. --Dave Gelly
