A deep voice behind Wendy observed wryly, “The Littles are having a lot of fun, aren’t they?”
Wendy turned to discover a very handsome, older man with a large mustache was standing behind her. With a quick smile, she offered him the delicacies on her tray. “Would you care for an appetizer, sir?” The man made her nervous. Not like in a smarmy, leering way. She’d dealt with many of those types of men that thought if you were a server that you were also on the menu. No, this man made her uncomfortable for a different reason. He seemed to see into her thoughts and read her feelings of longing. She’d been on her own for a long time. This closely-knit group was enviable. They were not only having fun at the holidays, but they all seemed to care for each other. She quickly diverted her eyes afraid he would see more reflected in her eyes.
“The Littles always enjoy getting together. They really enjoy the holidays with the extra bonus of presents,” the man said evenly. His tone didn’t indicate that he was giving away any secrets but that this was a normal path of conversations.
Before Wendy could stop herself, she blurted out her question, “Littles? Why do you call them Littles?” Immediately she turned bright red and apologized, “I’m sorry. It’s none of my business. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll take this tray to the other guests.
