When Ockley Masters receives a card baring the legend "Millionaires Must Die", he is certain it must be a joke. His friend, the solicitor and occasional detective Amos Petrie, is also inclined to dismiss the warning. He thinks differently however when he arrives at Masters's country house to find the man dead, apparently having drowned in an ornamental fish pond. Inspector Ripple gathers the house guests for questioning, but it is Petrie's passion for fishing which eventually provides the clue to the mystery...
