As anyone who has seen the fascinating documentary Theremin will realize, the instrument named after its inventor was far more than a gimmick. The theremin was the first electronic instrument. It was so difficult to play that it never really caught on, except for special effects in Hollywood film scores. But Clara Rockmore became its best-known player, and in this, her only recording, she shows herself to have been a great artist. Hearing her play Rachmaninov's Vocalise is a truly memorable experience. Rockmore's sister, a noted pianist herself, accompanies with great sensitivity, and the recording holds up well.
