Trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and guitarist John Abercrombie are wonderfully well-matched. They're both exceptionally lyrical players who have been heard in both free jazz and classically tinged contexts. They know the value of compactness and, as demonstrated here in their chamber-style interactions with second guitarist John Parricelli and Swedish bassist Anders Jormin, don't lose intensity when they play quietly. It Takes Two! may be one of Wheeler's most understated recordings, but with its Miles Davish overtones, improvisatory spirit and romantic thrust, it's also one of his most forceful. The one non-original song, "Love Theme From Spartacus," is a fine addition to the CamJazz label's ongoing sampling of movie music. --Lloyd Sachs
