The enchantment and wonder of Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) is magnificently captured in this meticulously detailed Carved by Heart piece. Beautifully crafted by famed folk-artist Jim Shore, this elaborately fashioned piece showcases the famed characters and the once-upon-a-time storytelling of the beloved animated film. All seven of Snow White’s loyal friends are intricately depicted, while the Evil Queen looms menacingly over the entire scene. Snow White is attired in her signature fairy-tale frock. As she makes a gentle curtsey-like gesture, the folds of her gown reveal a quaint, folk-art pattern. The Seven Dwarfs are each portrayed with a characteristic pose?Sneezy stifles a sneeze, Sleepy endearingly yawns, Doc looks comically pensive, Bashful looks sweetly shy, Happy beams with joy, and Grumpy is, well, grumpy, while Dopey dances a lively jig. The Evil Queen holds the iconic heart box?a symbol of her royal malice and one of the many ornate details enhancing this extravagant work?while on the back of this imperious figure, the Queen lurks in her frightening guise as the Hag. An elaborately detailed scene in itself, this portion of the sculpture features the witch-like Hag, accompanied by her ominous Raven, clutching the poisoned apple over a bubbling cauldron surrounded by skulls. The cruel monarch’s raiment is darkly adorned with folk-art inspired diamond patterns, while the Hag’s shroud-like robes are emblazoned with roiling rosemaling motifs. Crafted of hand-painted and patterned stone resin with the look of chiseled and carved wood, the piece has the appearance of being carved from a single log with a progression of bark and rough wood on the base with the characters and scene emerging on the top. One of the most elaborate sculptures in the Disney Traditions collection, this Carved by Heart piece reflects the artistry of Walt Disney’s first animated feature and the first Disney princess who is still the fairest one of all.
