Jazz & Cinema 2

The music on Jazz & Cinéma Volume Two has even more stars than were on Jazz & Cinéma Volume One. Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey and others guarantee the interest level. For Les Tricheurs producer Marcel Carne used touring JATP stars including Hawkins, Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson to provide 13 minutes of memorable music improvised on the spot. Hawkins is particularly passionate in his feature entitled "Clo's Blues". Benny Golson, arranger for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, took rather more trouble for the film Des Femmes Disparaissent, arranging a number of his own melodies to display to great advantage his tenor, Lee Morgan's trumpet and Blakey's drums. Once again the music's quality surpassed the film's but it was thanks to the film that the music was recorded. Two final pieces from Roger Vadim's La Bride Sur Le Cou, written by James Campbell and played by a quintet including pianist Georges Arvanitas, conclude this second volume of reminders that the French were indeed the pioneers who demonstrated the effective use of jazz in film-making. --Graham Colombé
