Genki is a textbook aimed at English speakers studying in Japan. It teaches common phrases, useful vocabulary, basic grammar, and the Japanese writing systems. Only the first 2 sections have any romanji; the rest of the series is in Kanji and kana, with kana readings for the Kanji. Grammar and vocabulary are presented in a straightforward fashion with the lessons, along with footnotes to provide greater detail.
The lessons themselves cover common situations for a student in Japan, along with cute and funny illustrations and dialogue.
The appendix has indexes of the vocabulary for Japanese to English and English to Japanese, along with charts for numbers and conjugation.
Alhough I am not a student nor in Japan, I have found this book to be an enjoyable way to learn Japanese on my own.
