The Rodgers and Hart show Babes in Arms continues to defy expectations of a modern performance despite its splendid score. This tip-top recording which restores the original orchestrations appropriately puts the accent on youth for this story about a group of teenagers putting on a summer show. Judy Kaye offers an hilarious account of "Way Out West" accompanied by an immaculate close-harmony quartet, as well as tearing into "The Lady is a Tramp", "Johnny One-Note" and joining Gregg Edelman for that haunting song about time, "Where or When". Jason Graae and Donna Kaye exchange "the broken plates and the hateful hates" of "I Wish I Were in Love Again" and sail into calmer waters for the little-known "You Are So Fair". The New Jersey Symphony offers stylish support throughout. This issue more than makes amends for the lack of any other recording of this Rodgers and Hart score on disc. -- Adrian Edwards
