83年、22歳にして Best Jazz Instrumental Solo を受賞したのを皮切りに、現在まで
9回のグラミーを受賞。知る限り、ジャズ界ではハンコックの11回?に次ぐ記録では？
本作も85年に2つのグラミーを受賞したウィントンの代表作だが、それにしてもなぜ、
こんなにもファンが少ないのか？

曰く、「スリルが無い」　「堅苦しい」　「お行儀が良すぎる」　etc...
はては尊敬するマイルスにまで　「若いくせに昔の音楽をやっているのが許せない」
などと因縁をつけられる始末。

"Black Codes" とは、南北戦争後、「奴隷制廃止」の流れに抗する "伝統的な"
米南部が作り上げた「黒人取締法」を指すという。

マイルスを神と仰ぐ "伝統的な" ジャズ・ファンが、「クラシックも嗜むしたり顔」で
ジャズ・ジャイアントの神格をあっさりと否定するがごとテクニックを見せ付ける
ウィントンに抱く、無意識の反感こそが、この過小評価＝Black Codesの正体では？

偏見なく耳を傾けさえすれば、過去の人々がマイルスに感じたのと同じスリルを、
もしかしたらそれ以上の輝きを、ウィントンのトランペットに感じるはずだと思います！

I bought this because I like the cover photo,
The contents are marverous beyond my expectation.
There are not mentioned about composer of tunes
performed hear, but I guess all the tunes are their
original.

Great improvisation of the group!
Especially Wynton's performance proves his big talent.
Technique-wise Wynton is the best player in contemporary
jazz fields nowaday.
Regarding personnel,ther are no description in liner notes.
I guess Branford Marsalis on sax and Kenny Kirkland on piano
and Jeff Watts on ds.(maybe,not sure)
Anyway this is very advanced music in 1985.
