May I Come in

This rare item in Blossom Dearie's catalog is, ironically, her most direct flirtation with making a "commercial" album. Less focused on the trademark simplicity of her piano-based arrangements, 1964's May I Come In? instead finds the singer fronting an orchestra in such then-trendy moves as a properly laidback take on Jobim's "Quiet Nights (Corcovado)" and the upbeat, Bacharach-esque treatment of "When Sunny Gets Blue." But Dearie's wistfulness and understated sexiness aren't harmed a bit; in fact, the opening cut, "Something Happens to Me," is an erotic gem. And "I'm Old Fashioned" is so perfect for her that the song might as well have been retired after she recorded it. --Rickey Wright
