Although the admirable North American magazine Jazz Times has covered all kinds of experimental jazz over the years, it may be a sign of the retrospective times that it has chosen to spend its sponsorship money on a solidly mainstream outfit. Its frontline, Randy Brecker and Bob Berg, are hard-bop veterans and organist Joey DeFrancesco and guitarist Paul Bollenback are among the younger players who have adopted earlier styles as their own. Only Dennis Chambers seems unlikely in this setting. He's best known for his slamming innovations in funk drumming in the 1980s, but here he behaves himself well, settling for self-expression in a few traded fours. The set holds no great surprises, just top-grade hard bop often with echoes of Berg and Brecker's former employer Horace Silver. Fusion followers may find a point of contact in the acoustic rehabilitation of Berg's once high wattage "Friday Night At The Cadillac Club". --Mark Gilbert
