All through this chilling depiction of a possible future, there's a sad sense of something lost, something forgotten. Family means little anymore, and you struggle to see where there's any joy in the characters' lives. Instead of "futuristic" music playing up the environment or technology, Nyman introduces two elements that focus on the story: first is a sense of sorrow. "The Morrow" immediately introduces this with adagio strings. A sub-plot involves sibling rivalry, portrayed by a secondary motif ("The One Moment") that also makes its mark via the string section, resolving ultimately in a rousing reprise at "The Other Side". The other aspect of the score is what made Nyman ideal for the job: he composes in cyclic cells. In chasing its own tail the music gives a complete statement of the not-so brave new world. To borrow the film's phonetic punning, it's a mournful work of gene-ius. --Paul Tonks
