Harris was a great inspirer of men. His infectious rolling blues and gospel-inspired piano work invariably fired the atmosphere of any session on which he played, and, as has been noted here before, he was a breaker up of houses. He was particularly potent laying before an audience. The Concord label was particularly kind to him and recorded him in every kind of setting. This, one of his last albums before he died in January 2000, was recorded at the Jazz Alley club in Los Angeles with a sextet. Organist Jack McDuff adds power to the rhythm section and supercharging to the saxophone work of altoist Ernie Watts and tenor man Red Holloway. The two horns play with ferocity with Holloway trying to lift the ceiling and Watts, as one would expect, putting more thought and invention into his solos. He is at his best on "Bird's Idea", a tribute to Charlie Parker and on Art Blakey's "Blues March" which also has the most dynamic piano solo of the set. There's a contrast with the beautiful version of "You've Changed" sung by Harris's daughter Niki.-- Steve Voce
