JOURNEY TO THE ONE

At the time when Pharoah Sanders added his tenor sax to John Coltrane in the mid-60s it would have been deemed fairly unlikely that his music would ever be termed as dance music: but 15 years later coupling his raw sax to a funky 70s beat it became just that. The track "You've Got To Have Freedom" became an anthem with it's unusual mix of jazz blow-out, disco-tinged piano and the most 70s-sounding backing singers you can imagine. You can all but hear the white flares flapping as they sing the chorus (one of them in fact was a certain Mr. Bobby McFerrin). This is true also of "Think About The One", which has Sanders sharing the limelight with lead singer Claudette Allen on a track sounding like a jazz number from the musical "Hair". Elsewhere there are more straight-ahead jazz numbers, with an ever changing back up group, but which generally has John Hicks playing solid piano behind a Pharoah Sanders who may be experimenting with the then new sounds, but remained a jazz man. --Phil Brett
