Released back in 1991, Electronic's eponymous debut album spawned a handful of hits (notably, "Getting Away With It"), and as a part-time project for two 80s indie legends (former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and New Order's Bernard Sumner), inspired a healthy flurry of media attention. The second, however--1996's Raise The Pressure--sunk almost without trace. Expectations were not especially high, therefore, for this success of this third release (would consumers still remember who they were?), though in fact it finds the duo on slightly firmer artistic ground. As ever, the sound defers more to Sumner's milieu than to Marr's; the guitarist contributes some typically mesmerising riffs, yet ultimately, this is a slickly-produced, slightly chilly brand of electronic pop that's not so radically different from the later New Order albums. Pleasant, if overly polite--though a reverent cover version of Steve Winwood's "Can't Find My Way Home" only reveals the limitations of Sumner's fragile vocals. --Andrew McGuire
