The Godfather Part II (1974 Film)

"The Godfather Waltz" is a piece that seems to play on most people's emotional heartstrings. It's as instantly recognisable a motif as any to hail from cinema, and as such has been rife for mimicking and outright theft. So naturally the only acceptable re-use deserves to have been this actually rather superior sequel film and score. Tackling an earlier historical chapter in the Corleone family history allowed Rota to fall back on the warm melodic charm often demonstrated in his association with director Federico Fellini. His new material (eg "The Immigrant") is just as rewarding as any of the underscore from the original. Thankfully, Carmine Coppola (director Francis' father) complements him perfectly. So much so that the score won an Academy Award, making it the first sequel to be deemed respectable. If it's been a while since you last experienced this music, maybe it's time to remember and respect the family again. --Paul Tonks
