Cypress Hill ushered in the dominance of the west coast and helped define hip-hop in the early 1990s with their blunted beats, funked-up drum loops and Spanglish rhymes which graphically portrayed life in the Los Angeles 'hood (and made them platinum selling artists along the way). Los Grandes Exitos En Espanol draws together material from the albums Cypress Hill, Black Sunday, III (Temples Of Boom) and IV, all of which were originally rhymed in English. The only difference this time is that Sen Dog and B Real rap in Spanish, which adds a new twist to song titles: "How I Could Just Kill A Man" turns into "No Entiendes la Onda"; "I wanna Get High" is transformed into "Yo Quiero Fumar"; while "Insane In The Brain" as "Loco En El CoCo" sounds like it was uttered by Tony Montana in Scarface. But, if the truth be told, the original versions have more of an edge. Los Grandes Exitos En Espanol is an ideal addition to your collection of Cypress Hill albums, if you happen to be a die-hard fan, but ultimately if you're unfamiliar with what they represent or you want to discover the essence of Cypress Hill (and you don't happen to speak Spanish), then listen to their previous work before venturing towards this compilation album. --Terna Heuston-Jibo
