The music of Stephane Grappelli and his partners must have lit up London's dark days in World War II, when they originally recorded this album, and this reissue will lift your spirits, gladden your heart, and leave you smiling with delight. Grappelli is supported by Hatchett's Swingtette, a band of stunning virtuosos, vocalist Beryl Davis, and his own groups; two tracks feature Django Reinhardt, and on one of them Grappelli doubles as pianist. No two pieces on the program are alike in mood, texture, or instrumentation, though it consists mainly of fast, swinging pieces. All are exciting and exhilarating, but the single slow ballad makes you long to hear more of Grappelli's beguilingly sweet tone. He is a truly incomparable player, with a brilliant, easy virtuoso technique; his bow control and of course his rhythm are incredible. But what makes him unique and irresistible is the sheer exuberant joy he radiates; it makes his playing dance, glitter, and soar. No one who saw him in concert can forget the intimate, happy little smile that never left his face, inviting the audience to share his pleasure. --Edith Eisler
