Stay What You Are

The third album from fast-rising punk stars Saves The Day, Stay What You Are is something of a milestone. In an age where sensitive punkboys are 10-a-penny, truly memorable emo albums are few and far between--but in just over 30 minutes, these three young New Jersey men reinvigorate the genre with nothing but a tight grip on the emotional rollercoaster and an eye for a good tune. Throughout, frontman Chris Conley's vocals are high but certain, vulnerable yet assured--and the music complements his delivery tightly, segueing between thrashy punk froth and passages of unexpectedly florid tenderness. The opening "At Your Funeral" cleverly shrouds its serious message--the memory of a late friend--in the language of a bullish punk scenester's boast that "This song will become / The anthem of your underground". Still, Conley sells his band too short: the likes of "Certain Tragedy" and "See You" combine the mainstream nous of Weezer with the sort of nu-punk histrionics in a way that should appeal to everyone from pop-punk fans to dedicated fanzine writers. --Louis Pattison
