I bought this book for my teen son, who has begun to lift his head from his keyboard and look at the world around him, and for my young adult English students, who often say that they miss the chance to explore theoretical issues when they specialize in sciences.

As the previous reviewer commented, the English is indeed easy to understand - it's an excellent model for modern academic writing. For non-native readers, however, it's a pity that the print is so small.

The 7 chapters each debate opposing views of scientific principles such as realism, and are organized so that it is very easy to read just one section.

小さい文字にめげないで読み続ければ、現代科学の基本に当る思想の原理について考えさせてくれる一冊です。英文ライティングの手本にもなります。科学的な内容はあまり専門的ではなく、凡人の私でも面白く読むことができました。

Oxford出版から刊行されているVery Short Introductionシリーズの一冊。同シリーズは、歴史、哲学、宗教、科学、人文の各分野について英米の一流の学者が一般向けに解説するもので、岩波書店からも「１冊で分かる」シリーズという名前で邦訳が順次刊行されているが、本書の邦訳は未刊。

本書は、科学と疑似科学の境界、帰納の問題と確率の意味、科学的説明とは何か、リアリズムと反リアリズムの対立、科学の進展と科学革命、科学の価値中立性といった科学哲学の代表的問題について解説したもの。記述は極めて明快で、読者の理解を助け、興味を引き立てるための具体例が豊富に挙げられている。Very Short Introductionシリーズには入門書にもかかわらず著者の個性が強く出たものが多いが、本書は特定の立場に偏らず公平な叙述を心掛けている。まるで入門書のお手本のような構成だ。英語としても大変読みやすい。

大きさは日本の新書とちょうど同じくらいなので、ポケットに入れて持ち運べる。文字がやや小さいが、慣れれば問題ない。値段も洋書にしては手ごろ。カバーのデザインがとても美しいのも特筆すべき点だ。
