This is the companion compilation to director Doug Pray's Scratch documentary, which went down well at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival. It's "compiled and constructed from scratch" by bassist and producer Bill Laswell, featuring a host of past collaborators on his various turntablist projects. Spoken snatches from the likes of Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow and Afrika Bambaata are shuffled in-between full-on deck work-outs from the innovative end of the scene. Slipping and sliding dexterity is maintained to a breathless degree, noise-swirls overloading, vinyl scattered and fragmented in virtuoso fashion, always levitating above a shuddering, striding bassline. An epic re-working of Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" acts as a centrepiece, with GrandMixer DXT, MixMaster Mike and Rob Swift amongst those jostling for scratching space. Other peaks come from the flabbergasting rotations of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, DJ Disk, with Buckethead's accelerated wah-wah guitar fills, and Cat Five vs Snake Eyes, their slamming, distorted beats dotted with abrasive vinyl-streaks. --Martin Longley
