統計的自然言語処理の定番教科書です。

多くの自然言語処理の研究室が輪読に使っており、これ1冊を読みきればNLPの基礎は身についたといっていいと思います。
1998年出版なので内容はやや古くなってきましたが、CRFなどの最新の理論は論文や高村本（http://amzn.to/bDTUH6)などの和書で学ぶと良いと思います。
それと、音声認識の分野はカバーされていないのでそちらを専門にしたい方は注意が必要です。

確率的な技法を用いるという立場から、この分野においてどんなテーマがあるのかを俯瞰するのには、良いと思います。
何せ16章もあるため、これで十分という深さまでは到達できません。
この本で興味をもったテーマを、文献をたどって行くというスタンスで。
