Cultural difference between two giant countries can be enjoyed through immigrants' eyes
★★★★★
Skillfully entwined eight stories unfold slowly one by one. Four of them are sorrowful memories of Chinese women who underwent the war against Japan and later immigrated to America. The other four are about bitter experience of their daughters who were puzzled by the cultural difference between eastern and western world. It’s intriguing to see the stark contrast between the two types of agonies, suffering within no-freedom world and puzzling within a free world. It's also interesting to read Americans' misunderstanding against China, such as proverbs in fortune cookies are from China. A big read, indeed.
