China-Japan-watcher ★★★★★
Haven't read this book, but following the 'see all my reviews' link of the 'China-Japan-watcher' reviewer below reveals an interesting tendency for (self?) promotion. Would the real George Zhibin Gu please stand up? (He can also be found writing word-for-word reviews of other China, Japan and Asian business-related books. "For this, I recommend...George Zhibin Gu"!
one of better books on current Japanese affairs ★★★★☆
Useful guide for foreign businessmen doing biz in Japan. Its style and presentation is highly readable. But it has serious weakness on the deeper issues about Japan: the tradiditional Japanese closedness and inclusiveness and their effects on the Japanese society and business are little addressed here. As a result, understanding Japan's challenges is still difficult, to say the least. For this, I recommend a nice book, which partly address these serious Japanese issues by a Chinese journalist George Zhibin Gu: China's global reach: markets, multinationals, and globalization, which offers sweeping views on the changing global economy as well as comparative studies on Japan, India and West.
Inspiring ★★★★★
I have found most books concerning "foreigners" or "foreigners running businesses" in Japan to be either overly pedagogical, overly repetitive, or downright depressing. Kudos to Carl Kay, Tim Clark and the editors. They have done a marvelous job putting together a fast-paced book, rich with facts and unique insights on real "gaijin" success stories. And, it's not about the typical white, Anglo-Saxon corporate raider from New York City. We hear feel-good stories of Chinese and Indian entrepreneurs, too. I couldn't put the book down. Order it now and you'll end up recommending it to your friends, as I have.
