The author is one of grandsons of Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), the zoologist, agnostic and controversialist ("Darwin's Bulldog"). Probably however, Aldous never believed in Darwin's theory, because he wrote a foreword to the abridged version of the book "Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death" by F.W.H. Myers, one of the founders of the society for psychical research in 1882.
My motivation of reading this book is due to Schroedinger, the scientist who invented the basic equation of quantum mechanics, Schroedinger equation. He praised this book very much; the cause and effect of his praise is as follows. Schroedinger wrote (1944) about the problem of "free will" in the epilogue "On Determinism and Free Will" in his essay "What is Life?" He dared to say to the effect that: I, in the widest meaning of the word, am the person, if any, who controls the 'motion of the atoms' according to the Laws of Nature. This statement is very much understandable because (a) we know that we have free will and (b) deterministic science says that our free will is the results of the 'motion of the atoms' in our brain; hence, (c) we need to control the motion of the atoms. Then the question arises: Where are we, if not in our brain? Probably, Schroedinger answered the question by the equation, "atman = Brahman," the well-known Upanishad mantra, which appears in the first chapter of Aldous' book.

　仏教、禅、キリスト教、キリスト教神秘主義、

人間ならだれしも体験できるある共通の
真理（最小公倍数的要素）を比較的短時間で浮かび上がらせてくれます。

　何と、「西遊記」の中の孫悟空のエピソードも登場して楽しめます。

　焦点の合されている体験は、悟り、解脱、合一など、それぞれの立場の言葉で
表現されますが、実体は（現代でも数千年昔でも）同じようです。

　例えば、「主の祈り」の冒頭部分、パウロの神秘体験（以上新約聖書）など
についても「永遠の哲学」という視点からわかりやすくコメントされています。

　大きな存在との合一、振り返ると自分（自我）が消え去っていた……
もしそれに近い体験、それが一瞬の出来事であっても一一
をお持ちの方々には、所属される宗教、哲学を問わず、
たいそう示唆に富んだ本だと思います。

　経典や儀式を大切にしている人々にも共感的、理解的に
語りかけられており、暖かい配慮を感じます。経典や儀式は本来は目的であり、
偶像ではないのですが、もし偶像視すると……
　どのようなお立場であれ、視野を広げることは、知的理解だけに留まらず、体験の
深まりを助けてくれるようです。

　一カ所だけ引用させていただきますが、専門用語ではなく、
その実体を読み取りくだされば幸いです。
　　賢者とは、「ブラフマン」（世界の最高原理）と「アートマン」（超越的自我）」の本質が
「純粋意識」であることを理解し、両者の絶対的な同一性を実感している者のことである。
「ブラフマン」と「アートマン」との同一性は数多くの聖典が認めている……

でき重宝します。
　多くの文献など、各々を引用することはできませんが、
目からウロコ、道を求める際に有益で励まされるコメントが多く、手元に置き、
時々読み返したくはる本です。

この本は『知覚の扉』『すばらしい新世界』『島』『恋愛対位法』等の著書で有名な
オルダス・ハクスリーが古今東西の神秘思想家たちによる言葉を、様々なテーマに分類、
紹介し、彼自身のコメントをつけたものである。

各章をいくつか紹介すると以下のとおり。
汝はそれなり/人格・聖性・神の化身/仁愛/心理/恩寵と自由意志/善と悪/時間と永遠
救い・解脱・悟り/沈黙/祈り/苦しみ/信/奇蹟/儀式・象徴・秘蹟/観照・行動・社会的効用

「哲学」というテーマを読むと難しそうだが、決してそうではなく、誰もが抱える心の
不安を賢人たちの言葉によって分析し、「そうだったのか」と納得させる本。
例えば「仁愛」の項を一部紹介すると、
「魂はみずから生気あらしめている肉体の中よりも、むしろ自らが愛しているものの中に
住む。なぜなら、魂は肉体の中に生命を有しているのではなく、むしろ肉体に生命を与え、
自らが愛しているものの中に生きるからである（十字架の聖ヨハネ）」

この本を購入したのはもう随分昔だが、今も繰り返しページを捲りたくなる。
全ての時代を通して、人の目からウロコを落とす、そんな本のひとつであると思う。

The excerpts from many sources are organized in such subjects as "Good and Evil" and "Time and Eternity." He specifically chose people that experienced what they are talking about as apposed to philosophers that take educated guesses at Reality. Some individual reader may come to different conclusions. But at least what is presented here is a concept not to be missed.
This book makes a great stepping stone to all the other writings and a good starting place for ones personal quest. There is a pretty comprehensive list of recommended books.
The excerpts are encapsulated with a clear definition and other examples of what is being expressed. It is always better to have someone tell you what you already know but in a different way. This allows for different insights. More then that it lets us know that "We are not alone."
