An apt title if ever there was one. On their second CD, Blackstreet went from being just another Teddy Riley act to a serious soul contender. Part of the reason can be heard on "No Diggity": easily the best single of 1996, it married a slinky Delta riff to four-part harmonies and hip-hop swagger. But Blackstreet proved they were more than just a one-hit wonder, or Riley's talented puppets. With Teddy's production (and vocals), some seriously fine songs--most notably the mid-tempo ballad "Don't Leave Me"--and singing from the other three members, Another Level elevated Blackstreet from R&B faves to pop stars, all without skimping on the attitude or the grooves. --Amy Linden
