Maurice Castle, a secret agent who has served for more than 30 years in the British Secret Service, divulges classified information on South Africa to the Russians, out of his personal allegiance to the communist who has helped his wife flee apartheid. Though he has longed for a quiet retiremant, the day eventually comes when he has to seek asylum in Moscow, where a life of estrangement and loneliness is certain to await him. This is a less spectacular espionage story peopled with characters not easy to denounce.

初めてこの小説に出会ったのは、もう20年以上も前のこと。
その間、数回にわたって新旧の邦訳、原書で読んで、まったく飽きることなく、その度に新しい視点と感慨を得る稀有の物語。
どんな端役も細部まで圧倒的な現実感をもって描かれた登場人物たちの造形、展開がわかっていてもなお息詰まるような緻密なストーリーテリング、一転、緊迫の急展開から深い余韻を残す結末。

とにかく読んでみて下さい。自分が孤独だと思う人には特にお勧め。
登場人物ほぼ全員が抱える凄絶な孤独を目の当たりにすると、なんというか元気が出ます。
「こんなんでも生きていけるんだな」と。
