期待したアクションは少なく会話が主である。
長編すぎると思う。もっと圧縮した方が内容が濃くなったのでは
ないだろうか。まりこと虎長のキャラクターは印象に残るものだったが
それ以外が少し深みにかけた気がした。筋書きが歴史上のものと
かなり近く、日本史を知らない外国人には面白いかもしれないが
日本人にとってはそれほど新鮮味がないのではないか。
侍というものの捉え方が極端に過ぎていると思うが、違う視点を
提供してくれたところに一読の意味があった。
会話中の「ネ」や「仕方がない」「カーマ」の言葉が多発されるところが
気になった。

A gripping and powerful story that makes you continue reading the whole thousand-odd pages. Clavell paints a perfect picture of the Japanese tranquility; especially the descriptions on the first few chapters about the surroundings, homes, people of this ‘strange’ land are quite fascinating. The humor in the cultural clash is wholesome!

I read this book during my very first days in Japan. I don’t know how accurate the historical facts are. In fact many small details in the book about the social and cultural setting of the time (around the 17th century A.D.) can be suspected to be wrong. But the important fact is Clavell is successful in giving the overall accurate picture on the background, while writing a hell of a story!
