日本にも多くのファンを持つディーヴァーの初期に分類される作品。
リンカーン・ライムらが活躍するシリーズを読破した読者はそれ以前の彼の作品にも興味を持たれるはず。
しかし、この物語は遅々として進まず、「ボーン・コレクター」などにみられるどんでん返しも無いまま
大団円を向かえます。−読み進めるのに苦労している間に新作「ソウル・コレクター」が発刊され、そちらを先に読んでしまいました−

この作品の意味は、リンカーン・ライムやキャサリン・ダンスなどの作品へ、
後に昇華する作家の萌芽として押さえるべきでしょう。

ジェフリー・ディーヴァーの作品群に興味を持たれ、作家としての軌跡に関心をお持ちの方のみにオススメします。

ジェフリー・ディーヴァーが『眠れぬイヴのために』の次に書いた作品。
本書には、アーロンという狂信的なサイコパスが登場し、重要な役割を演じている。

アーロンはセラピストを装い、１７才のミーガンと面談し、洗脳といってもいいほど巧みに、家族や友人に対する“怒り”を誘導して家出の書置きを書かせ、それと見せかけ誘拐、人里はなれた教会に監禁する。彼はミーガンを２日後の‘聖金曜日’に殺害するつもりなのだ。

ミーガンの父親テイトは、家出とはどうしても納得できず、別れた妻、知り合いの刑事、ミーガンの恋人、元カレたちの助けを借りて捜索を開始する。
彼らはアーロンを着実に追い詰めてゆくのだが、恋人、元カレ、刑事はアーロンの魔の手にかかってしまう。

なぜアーロンはミーガンを拉致したのか・・・、やがてこの誘拐劇には５年前の冤罪事件が絡んでいることが分かる。
そしてアーロンは、過去にも無免許のセラピストとして何人もの患者に対して、無理やり“罪悪感”を引き出し、自殺や自傷行為に追い込んでいた。
アーロンはただの狂人ではなく、この日のために周到な準備と綿密な計画を練り上げてきたのだ。

ラストで、自力で脱出をはかるミーガンと、やっと教会にたどり着いたテイト、そしてアーロンの３者が合間見えた時、思いもかけない真実が明かされる。

本書の特長は、“先が読めない意外性”、“予断を許さないストーリー展開”、“スピード感のある短い章立て”、そして何より“インパクトのある犯人”である。

ともあれ、ディーヴァーは、前作『眠れぬイヴのために』と本書をはずみとして、続く傑作『静寂の叫び』、さらに、＜リンカーン・ライム＞シリーズ第一作『ボーン・コレクター』へと“化ける”のである。

With his series of Licoln Rhyme novels I have quickly become a Jeffery Deaver fan. I also really enjoyed The Devil's Teardrop which did not feature the Rhyme character. Speaking In Tongues falls into this latter category. As far as I can tell it is a reissue of a novel that was actually released a few years ago and is being reisssued to capitalize on Deaver's recent surge in popularity. The premise of the book is interesting, unfortunately some of the plot points require such a suspense of reality that it detracts from the enjoyment of the book. The characters lack the dimension that Deaver usually provides and many times seem too cartoonish. Any fan of the suspense genre will not be surprised by any of the action. In other words we have seen this type of thing before and the writing is not engaging enough to make us forget it. If you are a fan of Deaver's work you will probably get some enjoyment out of this book, however I would suggest waiting for the paperback. I got to read and advance copy, but if I had paid over twenty dollars for the hard cover I know I would feel cheatedRead-Quest by Giorgio Kostantinos-instead. Its a must.

通勤電車の行き帰りに読んでいたのですが、疲れている
時には自分が追い込まれていくようで、読み進めることが
できませんでした。そのくらい犯人のトリックが周到かつ
残忍なのです。リンカーン・ライム、出てきてくれぇと
意味もなく祈っていました。秀作です。
